"Dinoflake" by Chris Gall
There is a bit of Desi in this story, but I am writing about my friend and college classmate/roommate Robert Mercer, who passed away this past August after a 5+ year fight against Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
I owe Robert for my passion for Asian Fusion music. He introduced me to artists like Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney before anyone really knew who they were. Try the mid 90's! I write about music instead of everything else because our search for it was a common bond that we shared.
Grace Lin, Children's book illustrator and wife of Robert Mercer, created, "Robert's Snow" a children's story about a mouse not allowed in the snow. The book was inspired by her husband Robert's battle with Ewing's sarcoma. After the book was published, Grace gathered artists from all over the children's book illustrating community to create special snowflakes to be auctioned off, with the proceeds benefiting sarcoma research at Dana-Farber. These snowflake auctions became known as the event "Robert's Snow."
The snowflakes are true originals and worth checking out. Apart from the snowflake auction there is a link to make donations to cancer research in Robert's name.
