I had written about Doshi Levien a while back. This article (image above) was posted in the recent Interior Design Magazine (March 2009), who seem to love these guys.
The image above is inspired by a traditional art form called "Rangoli". It is essentially sandpainting with the use of finely ground white and colored powder. These paintings tend to have been done at an entry of a home.
I am not sure how the sales of these rugs have progressed but my sense is that they would probably be used in a children's room. They seem to be a bit rudimentary with their simplified graphics and colors. I can't help but think of an orange slice for the rug on the bottom.
Rangoli Paintings tend to be a bit more colorful and intense. Even if Doshi Levien were literal with their designs, I am not sure who would buy a rug that looked like the Rangoli above?
I had posted some of Doshi Levien's items on our Twitter site and those that responded couldn't see the Indian in this. Maybe these are just to kitschy for the masses? It probably will not be long before these end up at your local dollar store. Back to the "drawing floor" for Doshi and Levien.
