Sustainable Chapals (Sandals) from India

These days we are surrounded by the idea of being "green" through sustainable products. In a recent search of Indian sustainable products I came accross DesignDirections, an Industrial Design firm based Pune, India.

The images above are of a sustainable "chappal" (sandals in Hindi) called "Solemates". They are made entirely from recycled newsprint and other paper pulps, right down to the twisted paper cords and free of dyes or bleach. The "Solemates" are biodegradable and cost about 12 Rupees ($0.30 USD). Not bad if we say so ourselves. Can't buy much for 30 cents these days.

DesignDirections believes that the disposable footwear can be used in locations like, “hospitals, hotels, software industries, religious places, meditation centers, massage parlors, etc”.

In, India it is customary to remove ones shoes before entering a temple. There could be a market for people that are paranoid that their shoes might get "jacked" at the door. The only issue will be the Monsoon Season. Maybe DesignDirections will create a water resistant version using natural, sustainable sealants?

We hope DesignDirections keeps up the creativity.
