I opened my mailbox the other day and noticed that McDonald's sent me a coupon for the surprisingly tasty "McCafe" frappe. Okay that isn't the reason why I am writing this post. I shuffled through the rest of my mail and didn't think to read the text until a few days later.
This is where the shock kicked in. How and why did McDonald's decide to send me a flyer with Hinglish text? What did I sign up for that they knew that I was Indian and that I understood Hinglish? This was some serious marketing if you ask me. I can't help but wonder if this advert comes in Cantonese, Spanish or Russian to name a few?
"Hamaari treat. McDonald's aaye aur enjoy kare." translates to Our Treat. Arrived at McDonald's for you to enjoy.
Just in case they got someone that doesn't understand Hinglish, they write in Hinglish to the left of the McCafe logo and English on the right. Or maybe this is for the McDonald's sales person that thinks that this coupon is full of typos? Regardless this is going to cause some confusion at my local franchise. I am almost afraid of causing a stir and will probably refrain from using the coupon. Besides there might be a special microchip embedded in the coupon that will allow McDonald's to track my purchases and thus use my statistics to introduce the "veggie" burger that they sell in, India. No, I am not a vegetarian. They only thing that I want McDonald's to start serving again, is the fried apple pie!
I make it a point to stop in any overseas McDonald's for this delectable treat. For those that have never tried one, you must give it a shot.
After a little bit of Internet research I found this from http://www.ccytsao.com/friedapplepie.htm:
"According to the McDonald’s timeline, the “baked apple pie replaces the fried apple pie on the standard menu” in 1992. Indeed, that was a sad decision, and fried apple pie enthusiasts grieved for the loss of their beloved pastry. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of the infamous dessert as it appears in McDonald’s restaurants located in Wal*Marts, airports, shopping malls, and overseas." Use the link above for a running list of locations.
Now please bring back the fried apple pie, McDonald's and you can send me a postcard in Sanskrit for all I care.

If you do not mind my asking, do you live in an area with a high Hindi-speaking population? I wonder how you were targeted to receive this... how can it be affordable for McDonalds to cater to (sorry to say) such a small minority in the US???
I do not live in an area with a high concentration of Hindi Speaking Indians. Hence my shock when I got this coupon.
