Obama - Fair and Lovely - Skin Bleaching

This image of President Obama, recently found its way to my inbox . The image is a spoof based on a skin bleeching agent, available in the Indian market by the Unilever Corporation.

From the Unilever Company Website:

World's no.1 fairness cream - Based on breakthrough scientific research on skin care from Unilever, Fair & Lovely fairness cream gives you unmatched radiant fairness in just 4 weeks. Fair & Lovely was developed in India in 1975. Nationally marketed since 1978 , this fairness cream brand has been extensively tested with consumers in India and abroad. In terms of benefit and delivery Fair & Lovely has proven to be superior to all key competitive brands Consumers perceive the brand as empowering and transformative.

The "empowering and transformative", part is the disoriented part of the description above. The thought that people are still concerned about the tone of this skin is disheartening and doesn't seem like it's going to be an obsolete idea, anytime soon.

The leader of the "free world" is a black man or "mulatto", but I can't help but wonder if certain societies have not come to grips with the idea? Sadly, the image above is a prime example of what some may consider, a reason for his election.

Along the same lines is an article from the LA Times:The Beyonce ad and skin bleaching .

Actually things ARE changing: if u noticed, hindi movie are using the word "gori" much less nowdays. It is not even spoken once in the modern movies like "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na", "Dil Chahta Hai", "Oye Lucky Lucky Oye" etc.

In the 1990's the word "gori" was said too many times in almost every movie. Songs were written where the guy would frequently call the girl "gori". Eg, "Goriya, chura na mera jiya" and "Chura ke teri raat, goriya chali" etc.

Agree?
